Илья Ильф и Евгений Петров [Ilya Ilf & Yevgeniy Petrov] (1897—1937 & 1902—1942) are perhaps the foremost Russian writers of humorous prose. It makes me want to bang my head against all walls to realise they both only lived to be 40 years old. (Chekhov died 44-year-old, too – succumbing to tuberculosis much like Ilf, while Petrov's newspaper correspondent's plane was shot down by the Germans in World War II.) What other masterpieces besides The Twelve Chairs and The Little Golden Calf could they not have otherwise created!
